Trail Project Weekend

Due to snow remaining longer than usual on trails in the park, the Friends trail weekend has been rescheduled for August 14,15,and 16. Friends can expect similar projects as last year: bridge construction and painting, reestablishing walkways, pruning, installation of waterbars, and construction of rock culverts. These projects will take place in the Castle Crest Wildflower Garden and perhaps involve the new Munson Valley Historic Trail. Registration, meals, and camping are as stated in the spring issue of the Friends newsletter. A camp cook is still needed for Friday and Saturday. Contact Greg Hartell at (541)862-1134 or Greg Reddell (541) 882-6257 to register or for more information.

Fire Lookout Training

Two training sessions have been scheduled. The first is set for Friday, July 24, from 10:00 to 3:00. The second is scheduled for Friday, August 14, also from 10:00 to 3:00. Training will start at the Community Center in Steel Circle. Friends must arrange transportation from the Community Center to the *Corrals* (Watchman Overlook) on the west Rim Drive. Remember to bring your lunch and be prepared to hike through some snow while traversing the Watchman. Contact Jim and Bev Glessner at (541)793-3205 to register and for more information.

Planting Collomia mazama

The spring planting of Collomia mazama with Casey Baldwin was a great success. Paul Pearson, Rachel Baker, Richard Sommer, Stan Pearson, Larry Baker and Bob Stevens met Casey and some of the park saff on June 27 at the Sphagnum Bog Trailhead. Around 240 C. mazama plugs were packed in and planted.

Another planting is scheduled for the last Saturday in September. Once again interested Friends are invited to camp and eat dinner the night before at Hamaker Campground. This planting could involve 800 plugs! Mark your calenders and call Amy Mark at (541)381-2286 by September 16 to register and for more information.

Cycle Oregon to Come Through The Park

The Friends have agreed to provide hospitality for the Cycle Oregon tour on Sept 16. A question and answer table will be set up at a lunch stop located at North Junction. Two or more Friends should be available to answer questions and hand out park and FOCLNP brochures. The Friends have also agreed to set up a rest stop at Kerr Notch for those cyclists who choose to go around the lake. This would involve five to seven people who would help with refreshments. Contact Judy Buckingham for information and to register at (541)783-3136. You can expect a full day committment. FOCLNP could receive as much as $500 from Cycle Oregon for this effort.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 1998 at the Watchman Restaurant, Rim Village.
