GLAD TO BE A BOARD MEMBER As a new member of the Friends of Crater Lake Board, I thought I would just take a moment to introduce myself to all our members. I have been fortunate in that I have assisted the past President, Greg Reddell, in some of the tasks and duties that he had to accomplish. This I enjoyed, I also find great satisfaction in attending the Friends 'work/trail' weekend camp outs. The dedication and willingness of our members to join in assisting the Park with various projects are something we can all be pround of. While I am glad to be a Board Member, I am anxious that I can bring something helpful and positive to the table, something that will help our membership to grow, and our projects to increase. I'm still searching for that something, hopefully it'll come to me soon. A portion of my childhood yeas were spent in Klamath Falls, so Crater Lake has become a pat of my childhood memories. I think this is why I am so interested in seeing that the best possible exposures are given to the Lake. It is truly a jewel in both the West and Oregon. My "real" job is that of Budget Technician for a Federal Agency. It is a job I enjoy very much, and I find very rewarding. The celebrations that are planned for next summer promises to be very enjoyable, rewarding, fun, and informative. I anticipate the 'Friends' being quite involved with everything. Again, I am happy to be a member of the board, and look forward to the many good things to come to the Friends of Crater Lake. Hope to see all of you at the celebrations next summer! Sandie Seifer
FRIENDS' ADOPT A HIGHWAY The Friends received a letter and this certificate from the Oregon Department of Transportation for our efforts in keeping Oregon clean and beautiful. Greg Hartell and I want to thank the Friends who participated in the Adopt a Highway this year in rain and shine. Greg Reddell KITCHEN STUFF The Volunteer House at Sleepy Hollow needs Kitchen utensils, cooking pots, pans, plates, glasses, silverware. If you have been a Winter Rim Desk Volunteer it's a nice experience to stay over night there. If you have kitchen things that aren't needed, the Volunteer's House does. Contact your local Board Member and they will get the kitchen things to Crater Lake. Greg Reddell WINTER 2001-2002 DESK Crater Lake is looking to the Friends again this winter to help at the Winter Information Desk. Park Ranger Kevin Bacher has told me they will be grateful for help from the Friends again this winter. Things are a little different from previous years because the Rim gift shop and eatery are closed. Since the Winter Rim Information Desk was located there, there is no Rim Information Desk this winter. However, Friends help is needed at the Steel Center desk, since that will be the only public service open in the park. It's been especially busy on weekends. The Steel Center will sell snacks and coffee, and it's been busy just trying to keep the coffee pot filled! Kevin needs Friends help with two things. First to help visitors at the Steel Center desk, help the ranger on duty keep up with the coffee pot, help sign people up for snowshoe walks, and help to cover lunch breaks. Secondary help is needed with roving the Rim Village parking lot (or maybe some of the nearby trails), assisting visitors in the field. Saturdays and Sundays are the days Kevin primarily will need help, and Fridays secondarily. Volunteers can be helpful any time through the winter. Friends who have not volunteered at the Winter Rim Desk and need to be oriented to the park, can call Kevin Bacher at (541) 594-3092 or Greg Reddell at (541) 882-6257 (greddell@cvc.net) and we can schedule a training. Friends that have volunteered in previous years can give Kevin Bacher a call (541) 594-3092 and work out a time. |
SUMMER PROJECT WEEKEND This summer the Friends continued trail rehabilitation on the Crater Peak Trail that we started in 2000. The Friends helped the Crater Lake Trail Crew construct rock steps in a steeper part of the trail, obliterated segments of old trail and removed surveying steps. Sunday morning Friends assembled a picnic table and spread surfacing on the Crater Peak Trail head. Brandon became a Junior Ranger.
