PRESIDENT'S REPORT Now I know what happens when you aren't available to attend the annual meeting of the Friendsyou become president! The awesome task of serving in this role during the 2002 celebration will be exciting and demanding. At this time, I want to thank Greg Reddell, president for the past three years, for his dedication, organization and hard work on behalf of all of us. The recruitment poster during World War II had the caption, I WANT YOU. I will reiterate the same theme, but in a different context. We need the involvement of all of us to accomplish the many projects planned for the 2002 Centennial. Four of the projects, sponsored by the Friends, and under the leadership of Glen Kaye, past board member, will be in place during 2002. All will need our support. The Crater Lake History Book, written by Rick Harmon of Portland, a professional historian and former editor of the Oregon Historical Quarterly, will be published by the Oregon State University Press in the Spring. Don LaPlant, a doctoral candidate at the University of Oregon, has written a one-act play on William Gladstone Steel's tireless efforts, 17 years of lobbying to have the lake declared a national park. This 45 minute performance, or a shorter version, will be offered to schools and organizations throughout Oregon. The Friends, park staff and staff of the Schneider Museum of Contemporary Art in Ashland collaborated to develop an artist in residence program. Fifty artists participated over a thirteen-month period. The exhibition of these works of art will be on an exhibit at the Schneider Museum June 28-October 5, 2002. The Mirror of Heaven, a public television program, is in progress. The Mazamas of Portland, OR has donated money toward the development of an hour-long program on the history of Crater Lake National Park. More monies are needed to bring this project to completion. Any donors out there? Another project is helping the park staff with organizing an employee's reunion for Monday, August 26, the day after the Centennial Rededication & Celebration at the Park. More projects will be described in the next issue. You can see why WE WANT AND NEED YOU. On a related matter, a planning retreat was held at the J. Herbert Stone Nursery in Central Point on November 16. Chuck Lundy, superintendent of the park, and Dave Brennan, our liaison and Chief Ranger at the park also participated. It was a productive day. Tom Dew, Community Assistance Coordinator, Rogue River National Forest, led us through a process of clarifying our mission, looking at our history and identifying emphasis areas with defined activities. Tom helped us to plan for an exciting future. It was a step in the right direction. Now we can move forward with confidence.
