SUMMER PROJECT WEEKEND

August 17,18,and l9

The Friend's Project Weekend is quickly approaching. The weekend of August 17, 18, and 19 are the dates for this summer's volunteer project. The Friends will continue work on the Videa Falls Picnic Area that was worked on last year. Like other years, Saturday will be the main work day and there will be various jobs for Friends to work on.

Come and join the Friends at the Lost Creek Campground Friday and Saturday nights. Friends arriving early on Friday can enjoy driving or hiking around the park. Friends who toured the historic Rim Village Buildings at last years Annual Meeting might want to check the renovation work. Friday evening there will be a lunch at the Friends Camp at Lost Creek Campground.

Saturday morning you can find coffee and rolls at the campground for the early rising campers or Friends who are arriving early on Saturday. We will meet at the Videa Falls picnic area for work assignments at 9:00. Don't worry about arriving late if you choose to drive up Saturday morning, we will be working at the picnic area so it will be easy to join in. Bring a lunch, water, work clothes, and comfortable work shoes. Bring clothes for fair or foul weather, expect it to be cold when the sun goes down.

There has been some construction work done by Crater Lake Park Maintenance this summer at the picnic area that Dave Brennan is going to coordinate Friends projects with. Some projects the Friends can complete to help the Crater Lake Park Maintenance will be rehabilitation of closed roads and barren areas at the picnic area, and relocating and planting shrubs and plants. There will be continuing work on the Crater Peak Trail...

Friends can expect similar projects as other years; reestablishing walkways, pruning, installation of water bars, and construction of rock culverts, and maybe painting and other chores. There are other jobs too: Friends are needed to answer questions from park visitors and help will be needed at the camp. If you make good camp coffee, give us a hand. Saturday evening will be dinner at Lost Creek Campground. Camp cooks are needed for Friday and Saturday evenings. Bring your own breakfast and noon lunches.

Crater Lake wants to have a nice project for the Friends this summer and the project to rehabilitate Videa Falls Picnic Area will be nice to complete for the Centennial. Sunday morning there might be some more work on the project.

To help Greg Hartell and Greg Reddell plan with Dave Brennan on how much help to expect, please call them or other Friends Board Member to let us know you are coming.

HELP NEEDED WITH VISITOR SURVEY

Next week, August 3 through August 6 Crater Lake will be doing a Visitor Survey. Chief Ranger Dave Brennnan asked me to notify Friends that Crater Lake National Park could use help with the visitor survey. The visitor survey is to gather information to use with the General Management Plan. The GMP will determine the long-term direction for resource management, visitor use and facility needs at Crater Lake National Park Dave needs 1 or 2 people to help at the Entrance Stations with passing out the surveys. The Friends would have a brief conversation with park visitors to see if they are willing to participate in a survey, and then hand them the survey which will be mailed back to the park. Friends who are available to help, call Dave Brennan at Crater Lake National Park at 541 594-2211 ext. 300. Greg Reddell
