PRESIDENT'S REPORT by Greg Reddell
I have been enjoying a very busy summer. During the last week of June and first two weeks of July I went vacationing to visit family and friends in Wisconsin. I enjoyed camping in the North Woods at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Also celebrated my mother's birthday and did some various projects on the family farm. I know other Friends are having a busy summer like me. Janet Wilson is in Greece. I will be looking forward to hearing about her travels when we have breakfast coffee at the upcoming project weekend. When I got back to Klamath falls, I contacted Superintendent Chuck Lundy to meet the Friends Crater Lake Liaison, David Brennan. You all remember from the Spring Newsletter that the Friends Liaison George Buckingham retired from being Chief Ranger at Crater Lake. David is selected to be Chief Ranger and has moved from the Grand Canyon National Park. George and Judy Buckingham, Bev and Greg Hartell, and I met David Brennan here in Klamath Falls after he spent a day house hunting and doing other moving tasks. David is looking forward to meeting Friends at the Project weekend. Friend Wayne Howe has written an article of his career at Crater Lake National Park. This is really nice leading to the 2002 Centennial. I have part of his article in this newsletter. Superintendent Chuck Lundy reports many activities at Crater Lake this summer. Restoration work on the Watchman Fire Lookout has resumed. Last year the Friends hiked to the Watchman Sunday afternoon after the work on the Park Headquarters Historic Trail. Chuck also mentioned that the Rim drive was open a month earlier this year. Work is progressing on a new water system at Rim Village and Park Headquarters with new fire hydrants. Chuck is also really excited about the mapping the bottom of Crater Lake. The 27-foot boat was expected to arrive the day we met Chuck but the helicopter to lift the boat to the lake was on a fire in Montana. I will have the coffee pot on and refreshments for Friends at Mazama Campground. Other project weekends the Friends have stayed at the Lost Creek Campground. This year the Youth Corps is using Lost Creek so The Friends will camp at Mazama Campground which is closer to the Crater Peak Trail Project. I will be hoping to see you this year. |
