FRIENDS ACTIVITIES FOR THE SUMMER
Time to sign up and Training dates are Soon

The Friends Training is July 16 and July 17 starting at 9:00 at the Community Center

With the stormy spring at Crater Lake National Park and the construction getting underway this spring, the Friends training was delayed into July this year. The training for Roving, Adopt-a-Trail and Adopt-a-Boundary is scheduled for the weekend of July 16 and 17 (roving on the 16th and trails and boundary on the 17th). The park service is saying this year that they are "encouraging" those that have had the training in the past to take it again but it is not required. It is required for those that have not taken it in the past. We anticipate that each day will be 1/2 day of training to go over all the responsibilities of the job, and then field trips to look at areas where we would like them to rove, trail locations, etc....

For all our new Friends here is a description of these Summer Activities that Friends of Crater Lake are assisting at Crater Lake National Park.

Contact visitors - disseminate park information and assist visitors through roving visitor services at Rim Village, rim overlooks and campgrounds, or information desk at Community House focused on future Science and Learning Center.

Provide trail head and roving trail visitor information and assistance on Cleetwood Cove Trail in peak visitation hours during boat tour season. This "preventive search & rescue" program would provide specific, detailed information to visitors on the difficulty of the trail, inquire whether visitors have adequate water/food/clothing, and discourage visitors with breathing, walking and cardiac problems from attempting the hike.

Once again the park is generously providing House 25 for the use of Friends volunteers. The sign up procedure will also remain the same as last summer. First, set up your volunteer work with the park coordinator (in the case of roving interpretation, that is Pete Peterson Pete_Peterson@nps.gov or 541-594-3093). Once that is established, contact foclnpalwaysonnetworks.com or The Friends Vice President Tom Dew at tdewcharter.net or call at 541-734-2213 and Tom will reserve a bedroom for you on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are Trail and Boundaries available for Adoption

Adopt-a-Boundary - Protect resources, provide visitor information and assistance, and protect park boundary integrity.

Adopt-a-Trail - Protect resources, provide visitor information and assistance, and maintain trails.

Contact foclnpalwaysonnetworks.com or The Friends Vice President Tom Dew at tdewcharter.net or call at (541)734-2213 so we can let the park know what to expect.

INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL AT SPRUCE LAKE
the weekend of July 23-24

Timing is critical before the plants drop their seeds

The Friends of Crater Lake will be helping Wendy Coleman, Botanist at Crater Lake, again with a variety of Botanical Projects.

This years priority is exotic plant species control throughout the park. July 23-24 we are removing weeds at Spruce Lake, on the western park boundary near the middle.

If you are intersted in assisting on this project and driving to Spruce Lake the morning of the project, we will provide you with better directions.

Friends interested in camping, we will camp at the Forest Service Campground at Hamaker Forest Service on the Prospect RD. The campground is located on Hwy 230 (Prospect - Diamond Lake Highway) between Union Creek and Diamond Lake. Similar to the Friends Project weekend, we will have a Friday evening lunch and a dinner Saturday at Hamaker campground.

Target species for control are mullein and St. Johns wort.

Twenty eight ponds are located inside the boundaries of Crater Lake National Park, with most situated in the western half of the park. The majority of these ponds have depths of two to four feet when filled with water and have maximum diameters ranging from 30 to 200 feet. Spruce Lake is the largest of the ponds, with a maximum depth of about 12 feet and a length of over 300 feet.
