Sam Raimi
Next to the Coen brothers, Sam Raimi is probably my favorite movie director -- not the best, mind you, just my favorite. He has that weird style with a warped sense of humor that I enjoy a lot. His most famous works are probably his Evil Dead trilogy (Evil Dead, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, and Army of Darkness). These movies all deal primarily with the main character, Ash (played by Bruce Campbell), getting his butt kicked by various undead nasties. But, the films incorporate as much slapstick humor as gore, making them rather unique. However, Sam also directed The Quick and the Dead, a western starring Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman that ruthlessly fires cliché after cliché All in all, though, it's a very entertaining movie. Other movies helmed by Sam include Darkman, a wacky comic-bookish film; and Crimewave, a very odd flick. Sam also appears in movies on occasion. He played the (very small) part of the butcher in the vampire flick Innocent Blood, for example.
