The X-Files: Fight the Future is the motion-picture inspired by the popular television series. Starring Gillian as FBI agent Dana Scully and David Duchovny as agent Fox Mulder, the movie follows the agents' quest for "the Truth" about the apparent government conspiracy and cover-up regarding extra-terrestrial life on Earth. The producers hoped to create a movie which would appeal to people who are not fans of the TV show. However, because I am a fan, I don't know if I can judge whether they succeeded or not. Ultimately, I think the movie is a lot like the Star Trek movies: while non-fans might be able to follow the story, there is so much history from the TV series that pertains to the movie that non-fans probably wouldn't get the "full experience," so to speak. But, from a fan's perspective, I'd say the movie was just okay. There was the geeky thrill of seeing my favorite TV actors' faces plastered on the big screen, and certainly I enjoyed watching Martin Landau play a paranoid conspiracy theorist, and much of the imagery was pretty cool too; but, it just wasn't anything remarkable. I think this is because the TV series is filmed in such a cinematic style that there really isn't much difference between the TV show and the movie. But, this is more of an endorsement for the TV show than a criticism of the movie. In any event, while I enjoyed the movie, I don't know if I'd recommend it to someone who wasn't a fan of the TV show (I'd probably recommend watching the show, first).
