Scott McQuigg Nov. 3, 2002
I am descendant of the McQuigg/Balfour lines of the Ethel and Cowlitz precinct census listings of 1910. Miner McQuigg was my great grandfather, and his eldest son, Henry was my grandfather. On the Balfour side, Hannah Weatherby-Balfour was my great-great grandmother. She was married to Patrick Fergueson Balfour, and lived on the upper Cowlitz River, in what is now the Salkum, Wa. mailing district. I am attempting reasearch on the following names from the Cowlitz/Ethel areas: McQuigg, Balfour, Spencer, and Hefley families. As listed in the 1910 census, the McQuigg's and the Balfours are inter-related, as are the Spencer's and Hefley families, all from that area between the early 1880's to present, where there are still McQuigg's living today (my grandmother who is now 91 and my father, in his mid-50's). If you have, or know anyone that has information about any of these families, I would appreciate this note being forwarded to them. I am of the Miner H. McQuigg / Adelaide Victoria Balfour-McQuigg family, who had Henry McQuigg. He married Clarice Louise Spencer (still living...Henry deceased in 1979) who's parents were Tracy (Trace) Spencer and Anna Hefley-Spencer. The deceased listed are all in Salkum/Mt. Hope cemetary, St. Francis Catholic Mission Cemetery, as well as the Winlock Cemetery. Am just getting started into all of this, but have a lot of info in some areas, and very little in others. Thank you in advance for your time and for any help you can offer.

I'm searching for my greataunt, Daisy A. Pierson Sanders, born October 20, 1884 in North Carolina. Daisy and husband, Lensy Sanders spent time in Washington State between 1910-1912 working the logging camps. They moved back to NC after that. A great misfortune happened and Lensy sent Daisy away and she was only seen one more time by her children. We think she may have returned to Washington State near Longview or Chehalis and possibly married to a man by the name of "Black". Daisy's daughter is now in her mid 90s and would like to have some closure in what happened to her mother. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CAVENESS family: I'm looking for info on the Caveness family which resided in Centralia in the early 1900's. Clyde Clarence Caveness was b. 1887, d. 1967 in Centralia, and came to Centralia in 1908 to go into business with his uncle, Alfred W. Caveness. They had "The New York Store" in downtown Centralia. Apparently there was another relative, John Caveness, who built the Caveness "mansion" still standing on Caveness Drive, near the Mountain View Cemetery. I'm doing research on the stagecoach days of southwest Washington, and the Caveness house was reportedly a stage stop around 1899. The City of Centralia has been given the harness-drying tower that was used to dry harnesses of the horses that pulled the stages. We will move the tower to Borst Park and restore it. I'd really appreciate any info verifying that John Caveness built the house, and that it was used as a stage stop.
