"James Madison Lillard and his wife were devoted lovers. On the day that Margaret (Neeld) Lillard died, her husband, James Madison Lillard, who was himself ill, saw the undertakers entering his home. He had not yet been informed of his wife's death. He told them that he knew, without being told, just what had occurred. As he wept over his grief, he died within an hour after his wife's death, on Nov. 13, 1901. Mrs. Ada (Lillard) Farmer informs that they had so many devoted friends that a church funeral was had for this aged couple, and that as James Madison Lillard's coffin rolled slowly down one aisle, that of Margaret (Neeld) Lillard came down the other and they met at the altar just like a bride and groom. They were burie beside each other in the cemetery at Harrodsburg, Kentucky."

Caveat: Gravestone in Spring Hill Cemetery says death year is 1896 - he also isn't listed in the 1900 Census. So perhaps this story isn't true?

"Mcafee, Major Allen L., Lawyer, was born August 15, 1825, in Mercer County, near Harrodsburg, Kentucky. His parents were Robert and Ellen (Moore) McAfee, the former a native of Mercer County, Kentucky, and the latter of Westmoreland County, Virginia, and the daughter of George Moore, of that state. His father was a lawyer and farmer by professionj, and died in 1859. McAfee Station, in Mercer County, was named in honor of his family, and was probably established as early as 1773, by Robert, William, James and George McAfee. He was educatged at St. Mary's College, in Marion County; chose the law for his profession, and in 1843, began his profession, under his father, at Harrodsburg; was admitted to the bar, and soon after located for practice at Paraclifta, Arkansas. In the following year he entered the army, as Lieutenant of Company G, First Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, under the command of his relative, Col. Archibald yell, and served through the Mexican War. He was wounded at the battle of Buena Vista. In 1848, he returned to Kentucky, and began merchandising and practicing his profession, at Nicholasville. In 1862, he entered the Confederate army, as Major of the Sixth Battalion, under Humphrey Marshall. In 1864, he was taken prisoner, and held until January, 1865; was then discharged on parole, and served until the end, as Confederate Commissioner, to look after supplies for the prisoners at Camp Douglas. He then returned to Nicholasville; was pardoned by President Johnson, and at once resumed the practice of law, which he has since continued with great success. In 1857, he was elected to represent to Jessamine County in the Legislature; and, in 1868, was elected to the State Senate. He has always been a Democrat in politics, and, in 1860, was a delegate to the Baltimore Convention, which nominated John C. Breckinridge. Religiously, he is Episcopalian. Major McAfee was married, December 21, 1848, to Elizabeth R. Shely, daughter of George W. Shely, a farmer of Jessamine County.

"Allen L. McAfee - Was long a prominent public man in Jessamine county. He died of cancer of the throat March 16, 1888. He was the second son of Col. Robert McAFee, and was born in McAfee, Mercer county, on the 15th of August, 1825. He was admitted to the bar in Harrodsburg in 1845, and removed to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he commenced the practice of his profession. About this time he commenced the practice of his profession. About this time the war with Mexico broke out, and he volunteered as a private in Captain Mean's company of cavalry, which was one of the companies in the regiment of Col. Ambrose Yell, who was killed at the battle of Buena Vista. In that battle Colonel McAfee bore a prominent part in the charge of Humphrey Marshall and Colonel Yell against 6,000 lancers, led by General Mineon, who attempted to take the American batteries. In the charge in which McKee, Clay and Willis were lost, Colonel McAfee saw a Mexican lancer in the act of killing a wounded soldier. He instantly shot the Mexican. He used what was in those days a celebrant gun known as the Mississippi rifle.
At the close of the Mexican war, Colonel McAfee moved to Nicholasville, and married Miss Elizabeth Shely. In 1857 he was elected a member of the Kentucky legislature. Early in 1861 Colonel McAfee was arrested as a Southern sympathizer; he was taken from his home at 12 o'clock at night on the 21st of June, and without warrant or charge was carried and lodged in prison in Lexington. A writ of habeas corpus was taken out by Frank Hunt, Esq., and W. C. P. Breckinridge, Esq., in order to get Colonel McAfee before the Federal Court, then in session at Frankfort, but the Federal officers suspended the writ of habeas corpus. On the way to Camp Chase, in Cincinnati, he escaped by walking away from the guards, passed through Central Kentucky and reached the South. He was commissioned lieutenant-colonel by James A. Seldon, Confederate Secretary of War. In 1864 he raised a battalion of 300 mounted men, and was with General Jones in Western Virginia, and helped to defeat General Averill's rail on Harrodsburg in 1864. He was severely wounded in 1862 at Big Creek Gap. He was capture in 1864, and remained in Camp Douglas until the close of the war. He was a magnificent looking man in physical appearance, and possessed a high degree of courage.
In 1866 he was elected State Senator, defeating Richard Spurr, of Fayette, by over 500 votes."

The following obituary originally appeared in The Lexington Herald, Lexington Ky, Wednesday, November 11, 1931, and was reproduced in the Bible records:
Harrodsburg, Ky. Nov. 10.--Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sharp were held this afternoon at Providence Presbyterian Church at McAfee, this county, where she had been a member for 83 years. She was born December 21, 1833 on the same farm on the Cummins Ferry Road, eight miles north of here, that was a land grant to her great-grandfather, Capt. John Armstrong, Revolutionary soldier of Virginia. Five generations have lived on the farm and the grant, signed by Benjamin Harrison, second governor of Virginia, is still in the possession of the family. Mrs. Sharp was the daughter of John Lapsley Armstrong and Alabama McAfee. She married William Henry Sharp in 1857, who died a number of years ago. The children surviving are William A. Sharp of Frankfort, Thomas Cleland Sharp of Portland, Ore., Miss Jennie Sharp, C. Bryson Sharp and Abe E. Sharp of Harrodsburg. Nineteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild survive. Mrs. J. Nolan Morgan of 222 Forest Park Road, Lexington, is a granddaughter of Mrs. Sharp. Burial in Providence Cemetery.

OBITURARY, Harrodsburg Herald, Fri., March 26, 1937:
"William Thomas McAfee, 89 years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Silas Evans, at Riton, Wisconsin, Saturday, March 20, 1937. His remains were brought to Talmage where they were taken from the train and interred in Providence cemetery by the side of his wife who preceded him to the grave ten years ago. Mr. McAfee was descended from five McAfee brothers who came to Kentucky in 1773 and made their homes in the wildnerness and founded McAfee Settlement on Salt River. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Armstrong. To this union were born two daughters and three sons, Bessie, who married Rev. W. E. Mitchell, a Presbyterian missionary in China; Nell, who married Mr. Silas Evans and resides at Riton, Wisconsin; Horace, Madison, Wisconsin; Howard, New Orleans; and Gilbert, who resides in the South. Besides the above children he leaves a granddaughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Drake, and a grandsonn, Harvey Evans, both of Wisconsin. Simple funeral services were conducted at the grave by Rev. G. B. Thompson, pastor of New Providence Presbyterian Church of which the deceased had been a member from childhood. Mr. McAfee was a greatly beloved citizen of the McAfee neighborhood where he spent the greater part of his life as a farmer."

[portrait] THOMAS JOYES

Sketched from a portrait owned by this distinguished citizen's grandson, Chapman C. Joyes.

The Joyes Family.

IT was after only three years in America that Patrick Joyes, of Galway, Ireland, cast his lot with the pioneers, reaching Louisville in the year 1784. This Irish gentleman, after completing his education in France and Spain, lived for some time in France, and with his wife, Anne O'Gara, of Ireland, sailed from Bordeaux and took up his residence in Philadelphia. Making a business trip to the Falls of the Ohio, he decided to settle here, and his first home, on the north east corner of Sixth and Main, remained in the possession of the family for 99 years.
The home of Anne and Patrick Joyes was famed for the hospitality of colonial days, so little understood by the most genial host of the present, with parties of friends and later of kinsmen, arriving on horseback and by stage coach from Virginia and the Central Kentucky settlements, assured of hearty welcome. Those were the days of the trundle beds and of huge bedrooms accommodating two or more of the old four posters, one of which slightly crowds the sleeping apartments of today. The style of entertaining continued in the Joyes family to the time when horseback rides were replaced by journeys on steam cars. In 1892, at the country

home of Patrick Joyes II, near Shelbyville, called 'Oxford" for his grandfather's boyhood home in Ireland, lavish hospitality was the echo of the century before. It was at "Oxford" that the second Patrick Joyes, with his family, spent the last twelve years of his life.
The Joyes family is entirely distinct from the family of Joyce, whose name is pronounced the same way, and, in fact, with the exception of an army officer, who emigrated from Galway much later than the Louisville settler, there are no other Joyeses in the States beside the descendants of Patrick and Anne Joyes, and comparatively few of them.
Two sons and three daughters were born to the pioneer couple at the home at Sixth and Main. All married and lived in either Louisville or Jefferson county. Thomas Joyes, born in 1789, the elder son, is said to have been the oldest male white child born within the city limits. Like other patriotic citizens of his time, he had ample opportunity for military service, figuring in the Wabash Campaign of 1812, and with the rank of captain fought with the 13th Kentucky militia at the Battle of New Orleans.
He was a surveyor and spent part of his young manhood in the office of the county clerk. He was sent to the Kentucky Legislature several times.

He was one of the Louisville citizens to be pallbearer at the re-interment of Daniel Boone's body at the Frankfort cemetery in 1845.
Thomas Joyes was noted as a linguist, inheriting the gift from his father, who spoke French, Spanish and German fluently. To these
