Anderson County, Kentucky, Deed Book H, Pages 430 and 431, February 13, 1854 lists the heirs of James Alexander (who married Mary Cardwell #114) as: 1) Robert Alexander and wife Mary B.; 2) John Alexander and wife Mary V.; 3) William Alexander; 4) James Alexander Jr.; 5) John Martin and wife Elizabeth; 6)  George Spaulding and wife Jane; 7)  James Spaulding and wife Mariam (not Mariann).

Jane was my ancestress and her sister's name to Mariam, not Mariann. Mariam was first married to Tarleton Holeman who died (they had a daughter), then she married a second time to James Spaulding. George and James Spaulding were brothers. I'm sure her name was Mariam--have seen it on her tombstone.

"Alexander Buchanan for forty-five years has been Justice of the Peace in Washington Township, Parke County. Politically he was an old-line Whig until the organization of the Republican Party, of which he was one of the charter members. At the time of his father's death, which occurred on March 29, 1839, our subject came into possession of the old homestead, which consisted of about three hundred and twenty acres and to this he, with his son Joseph, has added two hundred and eighty acres. As a farmer his career has been very successful and he has laid up sufficient to surround his declining years with every comfort. He was born in the year 1813, in Mercer County, Kentucky, and is the son of James and Margaret (McCampbell) Buchanan.

The father was a son of George and Margaret (McAfee) Buchanan, the former of whom was born in Virginia. The Buchanan and McAfee families both had representatives in the Revolutionary War. George Buchanan was a Whig in politics and was engaged in battle with the Indians several times. He was reared under the old rooftree, but having a stepmother he started out to make his own living when quite young. He had but one own brother, David, who died when young, but had two half-brothers, William and John. IN his native State he married the daughter of James McAfee, and shortly after went to Kentucky, where he entered Government land in Mercer County. His death occurred about the year 1812, in the faith of the Presbyterian Church, which he helped to establish in Mercer County. He reared a family of ten children, of whom James was the oldest, the others being John, Alexander, George, Polly (Mrs. William Provine), Margaret (Mrs. Thomas Carr), Jane (Mrs. James McCampbell), Ann (wife of Joseph Woods), Nancy (Mrs. Thomas Gilkerson), and Dorcas, wife of Joseph Woods, who is a cousin of Mrs. Ann Woods' husband.

Our subject's father was born in Virginia and went to Kentucky when about eighteen years of age, living with his uncle McAfee. He purchased land in Mercer County and followed farming during his lifetime, though he was in the milling business for a short time with his brother. He was first married in Kentucky, when Rebecca Armstrong became his wife. They had four children: Margaret, wife of Mathew Taylor; John, George and Robert, all deceased. After the death of this wife Mr. Buchanan married the lady who became our subject's mother. Of her three children, two died in infancy, and our subject is the only survivor. The father left Kentucky, and on his arrival in Parke County, entered land of the Government, this being in 1820. The following year, in October, he brought his family
in wagons to the place that was his home until his death, March 29, 1838. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, as was his family for generations past. He was a man of intelligence, had a good education for those days of limited advantages, and was a Whig in politics.

The gentleman of whom this is a brief biography lived with his parents until their death. He was married, in 1839, to Miss Harriet, daughter of Benjamin and Margaret (Youel) Allen, who were natives of the Old Dominion, while Mrs. Buchanan came for the Blue Grass region. The Allen family were early settlers of this county, to which they came about the year 1831, settling in this vicinity. Four children came to bless the hearthstone of our subject: Joseph C.; Elizabeth J., wife of John McMutry; William Y., who wedded Mary Mitchell; and one who died in infancy. Joseph, the eldest son, who in 1865 was chosen as County Surveyor by the Republicans and held this important position for two years, was married, in 1874, to Miss Eliza E. McCampbell. She was the daughter of John M. and Nancy A. McCampbell, natives of Kentucky and Parke County, Indiana, respectively, while Mrs. Buchanan was born in this county. They have had three children. One died in early childhood and the others are William W. and James C. Buchanan. Elizabeth lives within a few miles of her father's home and has a little son and daughter: Walter D. and Mary E. McMutry. William, the youngest of the family, lives on a portion of the old homestead, which he farms, and his one child, Freddie A. Buchanan. The sons, like their father, are stalwart Republicans and are influential citizens of the community in which their home is made. "

686. Wally Haley - El Paso Historical Society, "Magoffin Historic District," http://www.naki.net/dtf/Magoffin/magoffin.html., August 25, 1999.
"One of El Paso's oldest and most distinctive neighborhoods got its start in 1849, when James Wiley Magoffin settled on the banks of the Rio Grande and established a trading post to the east of the present downtown El Paso area. The area was soon known as Magoffinville after the veteran Chihuahua trader who made a fortune in mining, and who built a large adobe home, store and warehouse around an open square. The property was watered by an acequia running through the square. Magoffin's home of hacienda proportions was the centerpiece for lavish parties thrown to honor army and government officials. In 1854, a military post was established in Magoffinville named Fort Bliss. Both Magoffinville and Fort Bliss suffered from the fortunes of war and the ever wandering and flooding Rio Grande as time progressed.

When Magoffin arrived in the area, there were only a few other settlements of note, namely Hugh Stephenson's Concordia ranch, Juan Ponce de Leon's ranch was later owned by Benjamin Franklin Coons, and Simeon Hart's Mill. El Paso was first known as Franklin after Ben Franklin Coons and later as Magoffinville. An 1884 bird's eye view rendering of El Paso County shows the Magoffin Homestead located in an orchard. Streets are laid out and named but only a dozen other houses are adjacent to the homestead area. In 1917, General Anson Mills lived in the district at 717 Magoffin. Mills first surveyed and laid out the streets for the downtown area. Streets were named after many pioneers: Ochoa for Juan de Dios Ochoa, brother of Inocente Ochoa, wealthy Juarez merchants; Vincent St. Vrain was an Alderman; Octavia was Mrs. Magoffin; and Overland was named for the Stage Coach route. Because the Magoffinville area was the first neighborhood to be developed after the arrival of the railroads in 1880–1890, its houses reflect the styles and materials imported from the middle west and east coast. High Victorian was the prevalent style. Two examples of the Queen Anne design can be found at 912 and 1129 Magoffin (below). A rare example of Gothic Revival is the tiny German Lutheran Church at 1109 E. San Antonio. The Beall House at 817 Olive was constructed in 1882 and is unique for its all–redwood siding construction.

When the fashionable Sunset Heights neighborhood began to develop in 1906, Magoffinville suffered in several ways. The appeal of the high, rounded knolls for building sites overlooking the Rio Grande and the grand architectural styles and landscaping of Sunset Heights drew many from Magoffinville. In 1914 Kern Place became equally attractive and the wealthy and influential began moving out to these new developments. A lack of restrictive zoning policies in the Magoffin neighborhood resulted in a mixture of incompatible uses; residential, commercial and industrial. This mixture of uses only served to hasten deterioration in the area.

The Magoffin Home, built in 1875, is the most significant building in the District and one of the most historical in the city. It displays a regional architectural style developed in the Southwest between 1865 and 1880. A combination of native building techniques and materials and of popular eastern U.S. Building motifs, the territorial style was one of the first manifestations of the "Americanizing" of the southwest. The Magoffin Home, a rare Texas example of this style, is built of sun dried adobe with Greek Revival details apparent in its pedimented and pilastered doors and windows. The home originally had six rooms flanking a large central hall, another feature of the Territorial style , and exterior adobe mud plaster. Some time before 1887, the east ell was added and the home was covered with a lime plaster scored to resemble masonry. The three south rooms, probably dating to the 1870's, later were attached to the main house, forming a patio in the center. Fashionable Victorian–era wallpaper covered the walls and ceilings.

The Magoffin Home, purchased jointly in 1976 by the State of Texas and City of El Paso, contains many of the family furnishings including the 13–foot–high canopied bed, full–length, pier glass mirrored wardrobe, marble–topped chest and washstand in Mrs. Joseph Magoffin's bedroom. Several ornate chairs and matching settee show Mexican designs and possibly were manufactured locally. Today, the home is the centerpiece of much activity, offering a gift shop, tours and special events. "

741. Carolyn Niemantsverdriet-Bauer <carolynbauer  at  hotmail.com> "Do you have any additional information on Catherine McClain and her family? I am descended from one of her sisters -- Mary (Polly) who married Samuel Nevins in Mercer County, Kentucky and later John Martin Doty in Vigo County, Indiana. All three sisters maried men who owned land in Nevins Township, Vigo COunty, Indiana. The properties were on the northern edge of Nevins Township, next to Florida Township in Parke county, Indiana -- and John Martin Doty was one of the first settlers of Parke County.

I am also curious about the birth place of Catherine since the census records indicate that her younger sister, Mary, was born either in Scotland or "at sea" -- both are indicated on various years. If so, then I would have expected Catherine to have been born in Scotland. We have a "family tradition" that the father drowned in North Carolina and then the mother and three daughters moved to Mercer County -- although I don't know why."

JOHN F. CURRY was born near Terre Haute, Ind., February 28, 1824, son of James and Isabella (Hogg) Curry, natives of Kentucky, who came
to Indiana among the earliest settlers near Vincennes, and engaged in farming, dying in Knox County. Our subject, at the age of fourteen years,
served as apprentice in the tailor ship of Peter Hawk, at Carlisle, where he remained five years, when he started in business for himself. In 1846, he
quit the tailoring business, and began clerking for J. M. Parvin at Carlisle in the dry goods, staying with him until 1863, when he went to Illinois,
remaining six years, and in 1869 returned to Carlisle. In 1872, he was elected Sheriff of Sullivan County, and moved to Sullivan. In 1875, he went
into the grocery business, being still engaged in the same. Mr. Curry belongs to one of the oldest families of the county. He was married, February
18, 1847, to Miss Isabell Colshear, who bore him three children--Samuel and James (deceased), and Laura, wife of Thomas W. Anderson, who
resides at Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Curry died May 28, 1851, and October 8, 1853, Mr. Curry was married to Mary McClanahan, a daughter of
John and Elizabeth (McCrary) McClanahan, natives of Kentucky, and to this union were born two children--Hosea Coleman, and John Rush
(deceased). He and family are members of the Presbyterian Church, and he is an Odd Fellow, Sullivan Lodge, No. 147. Politically, Mr. Curry is a
Republican, and is the only Sheriff elected by that party.
