I haven't updated these links in years. At some point soon I hope to overhaul, clean up, and update everything here, and add new links and recs.
I'm not much of a web surfer, and don't read a lot of fanfic. So these links are more a reflection of my tastes in general, writers who I consistently admire, my friends (!), and just general stuff I think is fun.
Love that dark stuff. Kita and Jessica's bleak take on post-Gift Spike and post-resurrection Buffy, Six Foot Deep, really hit a lot of buttons for me. Great voices, movement, and characterization, and truly wonderful use of language. Find this and Kita's other stories (many slash) here.
Some of the best writing I've come across in any fandom: Kalima's stories blew me away, all of them, but definitely read A Couple of Ex-Demons..., Daemons Luminati, and This Messy Life if you love wonderful characterization, Spike, Buffy, and, well, everything. FayJay and Herself are also there, and FayJay's Spike/Dru series was a mesmerizing read about what might have led them to Sunnydale; Herself's Bittersweets series is not to be missed, though I confess I like the standalones best.
I just fell in love with Ghosts of Saturday Night at Sophia's site. It's clever, spot-on Spike characterization, a wonderful and unusual premise, and has lovely dialog and metaphors. This girl can write. There are also a number of X-Files stories on her page worth checking out.
I've hosted a number of Keiko Kirin's wonderful stories on my site for some time, and now she's got her own site with her newer Stargate SG-1 fiction, and some of her older stories in fandoms such as Law & Order and Wiseguy. If you do nothing else, read the fabulous Steak series, but you should read it all -- she's truly one of my favorite writers in fandom.
Olivia is one of the best writers around, plus she's just a fantastic person with a lot of insight into what makes writing work. Her story The Hitchhiker was one of the first adult, intelligent pictures of both Mulder and Skinner I'd seen in ages, plus it had a real X-File in it. The work in progress, a Lonely Death, is wonderful, and she's working in some new fandoms including Sentinel.
Merry Lynne writes in a number of fandoms, with emotionally dense and rich stories that rely on solid characterization. Check out her page for wonderful Sentinel, Smallville, Sports Night, and Highlander stories (for HL, especially read Resolution and Intervention). She's also got a Due South archive there, and is now venturing into popslash territory!
CazQ is a lovely writer who really knows how to use language. Her story The Furious Winter, about a post-colonization Mulder and Scully, was my favorite of 1999, and is still quite possibly one of the best fan stories I've ever read.
Anna is doing a variety of fandoms, most especially Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with an alternate "season" called Season Noir and some S/X slash. She's also published recently some Stargate fiction, and there are still her stories in Sentinel and X-Files.
Vehemently's page offers some odd pairings, but damn, she can write. Vacillation is a vignette about the indecision and regret in Skinner's life, which I liked very much. A M/Sc piece at her home page is also very good.
Oblique Publications, the longtime publisher of M. Fae Glasgow's stories, now have many of their zines up in PDF format. You'll find XF, Pros, Blake's 7, Due South, and others. It's also an adorable site, using the London Underground typeface and iconography.
KC has an excellent page that includes an archive and links to some of the best of the Pros "circuit" library. There's a substantial amount there now, and she is in the process of adding more. This is some of the classic Pros fanfic. Check it out!
Rachael Sabotini is a fellow emotion junkie who writes Highlander, Sentinel, Harry Potter, and Phantom Menace, among many, stories; she also features some of her older Pros stories, as well as many other subjects.
Rachael's frequent partners in crime, who often write with her as The Krell, are Killa and elynross. Their pages offer rich fanfic in a number of different fandoms, notably Highlander.
Yahtzee's site offers a number of different fandoms, including some Buffy and XF straight fanfic, Phantom Menace slash, and others.
JiM's page features her excellent Mulder/Skinner fiction, as well as other pairings and other fandoms. Do check out Head Games and Wakened by Silence if you love the Surly One.
I've been divided about Wombat's fiction (the Britishisms especially bug me, when they're easily remedied), but I loved September (which seems to be at a different site). I had major problems with one of the plot points but otherwise it's gorgeous. I also like Dear Mr. Mulder and other humor stories at her home page.
And of course there's the Mulder Skinner Slash Society site, with fiction archives, photos, and other cool stuff. I'm especially fond of the sublime Gloria Lancaster's excellent Missing in Action.
I can't imagine there isn't anyone checking my links who doesn't know torch's page. My favorites are Ghosts and Witness Tree, and also her Characterization musings in the Buttons section. And she's also doing popslash these days.
Sandy, the fannish butterfly, is a fellow Media Cannibal (see below) who has a page with her musings, rants & raves, and a couple stories (especially check out her Skinner piece).
I hang out with a group of fans who are well-known for our songvids; we're called the Media Cannibals. We have a new songvid tape out with vids in fandoms such as BtVS, XF, Magnificent 7, Sentinel, HL, Oz, Homicide, and way more. We've also reissued our tapes 4 and 3 in limited quantities. There's not much on our page now except links to other MC pages, but if you want to get info on the vids or other stuff, this is where to start. You can also e-mail us and we can forward you more detailed info on the songvid tapes.
Some wonderful art, mostly slash, can be found at the X-art site. Look for really nice Mag 7 pieces, HL, LotR, Star Wars, Fast and the Furious, and a lot more in many other fandoms. If you're like me, you often want to run away at what some people think of as fan art, but this is the good stuff, and absolutely worth a visit.
I like Arduinna's frequently funny, almost always right on the money, essays on fandom (the profit one is missing some historical information, though; and some of the writing instruction is just plain wrong, but the intentions are good). Go to her main page here, click enter, and look for the Rants. I wish I could make much of this required reading for all fans.
Melina has written a wonderful essay about the similarities between Duncan and Nikita, Methos and Michael, and the Campbell archetypes they represent. If you're a fan of either show, and at least know a tiny bit about the other, you can easily enjoy it, and if you've watched both, you'll love it.
Two shows I'm mad about are La Femme Nikita and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. One thing I love about both is the music they use. Two great pages provide listings of the music used in each episode, and how to get it. Try the Buffy Music Website and the Sounds of LFN.
I am insane for the wicked and wonderful, duplicitous and divine Michael (Roy Dupuis) of La Femme Nikita. Nice sites with lots of pictures are the Roy Dupuis home page and Michael's Obeyance Pool, (this site has been downsized seriously and is now a subpage) and Les Hombres de Michel.
I worship Vince Gilligan, who has written most of my favorite episodes of the X-Files. Apparently I'm not alone, because there's now a web page devoted to him. Check out the Vince Gilligan Information Page.
One of my favorite shows in between Pros and XF fandom was Miami Vice. The Miami Vice Chronicles is a well-done site with great info.
If you enjoyed the fascinating, unusual film Velvet Goldmine, here's a great web site, with lots of great stills and links.
One of the most enjoyable, funny, weird, and wonderful sites I've ever seen, Lileks.com includes such pages as the Institute of Official Cheer, where you can find everything from Regrettable Food to scary 70s home decorating tips. You could spend months at this site and still not see everything, and you will definitely come away with lots of .sig lines.
Think clowns are the spawn of hell? I do! And apparently so do hundreds of others who've written in to the evil clown site. The story from the EMT worker locked in a hallway with Pennywise is a riot.
Like poking holes in the science and pseudo-science of The X-Files? Try the Science Behind the X-Files page. It hasn't been updated for seasons 5 & 6 yet, but it's still interesting.
The scientific study of marshmallow peeps is long overdue, and this site steps up to the plate: includes the effects of alcohol and tobacco on peep health, peeps and extreme cold, and much more!
I am a product of my environment, specifically the '60s and '70s. DeeT's 70s page has some great stuff, including one of the things I miss most, Quisp cereal. You can download an entire Quisp commercial, but no fear: Quake's in it too.
I'm a science geek at heart, with a particular interest in astronomy and space stuff. The NASA web site is a blast, but its sister page, Space Science News, is even more chock-full of interesting discoveries -- plus it has the splendid Ask a Scientist. You never know what kind of X-Files ideas you might get from these pages!
If you love cats, check out Kittycam , with its ever-changing pictures of the cats. And there's the cat scan site, with, well, scanned cats. Hilarious and wonderful. I also like Pet of the Day for its charming animal friends.
For people who like black humor, there's the Darwin Awards, given to folks who remove themselves from the gene pool in the most spectacular fashions.
