RATS
Rats are very intelligent and require a stimulating environment to explore and play in. The species is a social one and can be kept in pairs of the same sex.
[Mulder says, "For really stimulating environments, there's nothing like a filthy prison cell, but you should experiment until you find what's best for you and your pet."]
HANDLING
It is uncommon for one of these pets to be vicious, but they will bite when handled too quickly or roughly. To pet a rodent, slowly pick it up by cradling or cupping your hands, then place the animal on a flat surface with a bit of food. Gently stroke the back. Repeat this every day, as often as you can, and soon you will have a little friend that trusts you.
[Mulder says, "I have had best luck with placing my pet on a firm mattress, and gently stroking the back with rhythmic motions of steadily increasing pace. For treats I use Godiva chocolates. I have never gotten my little friend to fully trust me, but then I don't really trust him much either. Still, there's always next season!"]
HEALTH
Lumps, bumps and broken legs are rodents' most common medical problem. Broken bones are often sustained from falls so it is best to handle your animal while sitting down.
[Mulder says, "Frankly I prefer to handle my animal while standing up, against a bank of phones for instance. Lying down is nice too, though. He does seem to sustain a lot of injuries, but he always recovers very prettily...and I think too that he actually enjoys them. Firm training can accomplish wonders!"]
