Oh
no! I think I've got a virus...what do I do?
If you believe that your computer has contracted a virus,
that can be diagnosed, and if necessary be removed from
your system, with one of the commercially available anti-virus
programs such as Norton
Anti-Virus or McAfee
VirusScan.
As
soon as you think you are infected there are two very
important things to do:
1.
Turn your computer off (until you get and install your anti-virus
program). As long as you are connected to the Internet,
you are probably attacking other computers. Turning off
your e-mail program is not enough, because you don't know
what you're infected with and how it propagates. At the
very least, if you have dialup, don't dialup. If you have
DSL, unplug your DSL modem.
2.When
you are installing your anti-virus software, follow the
instructions very carefully, specifically concerning downloading
the most recent virus definitions. After you install
the software, you will need to reconnect to the Internet
to download these updates: that's okay.
