INIT
Strings
(What is an INIT
string?)
If
you are connecting at a very high speed but your modem is
retraining itself due to line noise or increased traffic,
you may experience "dead air." Your modem will "hang" with
no data transfering in either direction. This can make downloading
a new driver or flash firmware update difficult.
There
are a few possible solutions. The first (and easiest) thing
to try is to add three commas at the end of the phone number
for Drizzle, like this:
8120034,,,
This
may "trick" your modem into connecting at a lower speed.
If
that doesn't work, remove the commas, and try using an INIT
string. Do not use the comma trick with an INIT string.
To
reset your modem using an INIT string, try the following
one at a time in order (placement directions below):
- AT+MS=11,1
- AT+MS=V34
- ATS32=98
- AT+MS=11
(resets all Flex modems to v.34)
In
Windows 95/98:
open the Modems Control Panel, in the list of modems installed
click on your modem, click on Properties, click on the Connection
tab, click on the Advanced button, and type one of the strings
into the box labeled Extra Settings. Save all the changes,
and try dialing again. If it does not help, repeat the process,
removing the string you just tried and replacing it with
the next string.
In
MacOS:
if you are using the PPP or Remote Access control panels
to connect, you will need to download a CCL script from
your modem manufacturer. Please e-mail or call us and we
will tell you how to do so. It may be more beneficial to
download FreePPP,
and follow the instructions below to enter an INIT string.
In
MacOS, if you are using FreePPP:
open FreePPP Setup, press the Modem button on the General
tab, and type the INIT string in the big box. Click the
Use button next to the box. Save all the changes, and try
dialing again. If it does not help, repeat the process,
removing the string you just tried and replacing it with
the next string.
