Drizzle
56K - v.90 and K56Flex
Reality
Check: The
first thing you need to know about 56K modems is that you
will never see a 56K connection. 56K modems can deliver
download speeds up to 56,000 bytes per second, but only
under "laboratory" conditions. The reality of consumer telephone
service in Seattle is far from "laboratory" conditions.
"56K" is a name for marketing purposes only. If I were naming
these modems, I would call them "40-something" modems, because
you will probably see download rates between 40K and 50K,
at best. Also, your ability to achieve faster downloads
with a 56K modem is largely dependent on the telephone wiring
to and in your home. Unfortunately, it's difficult to predict
whether or not 56K modems will work for you until you get
a modem and try it out. More on this later...
The
Good News: Regardless of the numbers, these modems will
serve up web sites and download files noticeably faster
than you are able to now with 33.6, 28.8 or 14.4 modems.
If it works for you, it's going to be worth it.
