VISUALIZING BAST

Bast is frequently referred to as a cat goddess, but here is something more
specific. First of all, in her original form as a lion-headed goddess she is painted
green. As a cat goddess though she can take over a wide variety of forms. She
may appear as an upright cat, holding a sistrum (ritual rattle) and aegis (a lion
head with concentric circles around it). Or else she may appear as having a
woman’s body and a cat’s head, but holding the same things as before. The
aegis of Bast however often has a cat’s head instead of a lion’s head.

This presents a question? If most of the statues are uncoloured, what colour
should one imagine Bast’s cat-fur? The answer is not so sure. Probably her fur
would be black, however it could also be ginger, orange brown or gray.
