Sky Cries Mary hit the scenes around the time that Nirvana and Pearl Jam were defining the grunge scene here in Seattle. But, unlike those other bands, Sky Cries Mary went the ambient route.
I'm not sure why I like Sky Cries Mary, but I do. I find their music to be very soothing -- the perfect thing to have going on in the background when I'm reading or doing something else somewhat serious. SCM's music definitely has a mystical, spiritual feeling to it rife with Eastern influences. I don't claim to know or understand the band's philosophy (if there is one), but I know what I like. Yet another band I like that has made use of the didgeridoo! If you want more info about what Sky Cries Mary is all about, check out some of their other websites.
I've seen Sky Cries Mary a few times live. Their performances are truly that -- performances. In the shows that I've seen, they used light, projected images, costumes and a whole array of visual art and effects to supplement the music. Kind of like GWAR, but in a good way. heh. Okay okay -- they're nothing like GWAR! Anyway, it's a great combination.
Sky Cries Mary seems to be anchored by Anisa Romero, Roderick Romero, Ben Ireland, Gordon Raphael, Michael Cozzi, Todd Robbins and Juano; but, a number of other artists have appeared on their albums too, namely DJ Fallout, Joseph E. Howard, Marc Olsen, Robin Boomer, Larry Halpern, Serge, Krist Novaselic (hmmm...) and Charlie Rowan.
There are actually two other albums than those shown below. One is called "Until the Grinders Cease" and the other is "Don't Eat the Dirt" released in 1989 and 1990, respectively. Unfortunately, I don't have these yet.
There's now also a "greatest hits" album called, deliciously enough, "Fresh Fruit for the Liberation", which contains some of SCM's older and rarer stuff. As usual, it's a great album and the art in the CD insert is pretty cool, too.
